Sports may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the St. Pete/Clearwater region, but there are actually quite a few noteworthy athletic and sporting events held in town.
Arguably the most popular sporting events around are the Philadelphia Phillies and Toronto Blue Jays’ MLB Spring Training games, with thousands of fans hoping to snag tickets each year. But close behind are the local Tampa Bay Rays baseball games, held at the Tropicana Dome in St. Pete.
If you’re more of a soccer fan, catch a Tampa Bay Rowdies game at Al Lang Stadium. Golfers, the Valspar Championship, a PGA TOUR tournament, at Innisbrook Golf and Spa Resort is one event you won’t want to miss out on. Hockey lovers, the Stanley Cup-winning Tampa Bay Lightning regularly plays (and wins) at Amalie Arena. And racing fans, the Firestone Grand Prix takes place right on the waterfront streets of downtown St. Pete.
We certainly can’t forget to mention football, the most popular sport in the U.S. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers rule the fall season with their games at Raymond James Stadium in nearby Tampa. And when January rolls around, some of the best football teams in the region compete in the ReliaQuest Bowl, also in Tampa.
